If you need a molding contract manufacturer, there are several options you have. Contract manufacturers typically belong to a trade association or organization and are connected with a large number of other molding contract manufacturers. In most cases, these contract manufacturers will be able to provide you with a sample of their work for a fee.
A contract manufacturer will generally manufacture both the parts and the molds that are needed to manufacture your products. Contract manufacturers usually specialize in just the mold type that they are able to manufacture and the materials they are able to use to manufacture molds. You will likely only need a contract manufacturer for injection molded products such as cans, caps, and other food service product molds. Moulding contract manufacturers will also be able to manufacture a limited selection of plastic injection molds for food service. Some will even be able to manufacture full line injection molds for your product needs. For other molding services and products, a smaller volume manufacturer may be more appropriate.
One option that you may not have considered is using a contract manufacturing company to manufacture a limited number of moldings for a single product. If you have a very specific mold design that you need produced, this can save you a tremendous amount of money on the production of the item. If you have a very intricate molding design that you require produced in a limited quantity, it can be more cost effective and efficient to work with a contract manufacturer to produce just the molding for a short period of time than to purchase the molding and have it sit for months until you can produce it in large quantities. Many injection Molding contract manufacturer will agree to a limited quantity on a specific project, if you are able to meet your molding requirements prior to them being manufactured.
Another advantage to working with a contract manufacturer instead of producing the moldings yourself is that many will do all of the machining of the parts that are needed. All you will need to provide are materials to help you complete the molds, tools to help you cut the plastic parts, and an area where you can install the molds once they are completed. Instead of you needing to spend time designing the moldings and spending more time going back and forth to the business to get them done, you can simply work from your computer at home and have the molds delivered right to your door. This saves you a tremendous amount of time, and you will be able to finish the plastic parts much like you would normally.
You will find that many of these contract manufacturers will also be able to provide a number of options to you when it comes to the injection molding process. Depending on the complexity of the design that you require, you will be able to choose from a variety of different options. Contract manufacturers will either use injection molding machines or manual CNC machines to complete the part design. Each option has its own set of benefits and drawbacks, so you will want to know which option will work best for your particular needs.
Because the CNC injection molding process is so faster than the manual process, it is often used whenever possible. The downside to the CNC process is that it is much like having a computer chip pressed into each part. You have to be very precise when you are using the CNC machine, as it can make some parts very thin or too thick. It can also sometimes leave off parts of the material that you need in order to keep the cost down, which is why so many manufacturers use the automatic process rather than the manual process.
